A separation between semantic and syntactic cutting planes

چکیده
In this note we argue that semantic cutting planes refutations are stronger than syntactic ones. In particular, we give a formula for which any refutation in syntactic cutting planes requires exponential length, while there is a polynomial length refutation in semantic cutting planes. This means that syntactic cutting planes does not p-simulate (nor simulate) semantic cutting planes. We also give a pair of incompatible cutting planes lines which require exponential length to be refuted in syntactic cutting planes.

Semantic Versus Syntactic Cutting Planes
In this paper, we compare the strength of the semantic and syntactic version of the cutting planes proof system. First, we show that the lower bound technique of [22] applies also to semantic cutting planes: the proof system has feasible interpolation via monotone real circuits, which gives an exponential lower bound on lengths of semantic cutting planes refutations. Second, we show that semant...

Abstract Extracting semantic roles is one of the major steps in representing text meaning. It refers to finding the semantic relations between a predicate and syntactic constituents in a sentence. In this paper we present a semantic role labeling system for Persian, using memory-based learning model and standard features. Our proposed system implements a two-phase architecture to first identify...
متن کاملA syntactic-semantic analysis of \"منصوب به نزع خافض\"based on the Holy Quran
One of important issues in the field of implication and aggression is "منصوب به نزع خافض". It is an idiom related to مفعول به "”. By referring to its definition, a syntactic-semantic analysis will be done in this paper. It tries to indicate what is the relationship between word and meaning and to what extent Arabic syntax focu...
متن کاملOn the Relative Complexity of Resolution Refinements and Cutting Planes Proof Systems
An exponential lower bound for the size of tree-like Cutting Planes refutations of a certain family of CNF formulas with polynomial size resolution refutations is proved. This implies an exponential separation between the tree-like versions and the dag-like versions of resolution and Cutting Planes. In both cases only superpolynomial separations were known [29, 18, 8]. In order to prove these s...
متن کاملVerbs in Applied Linguistics Research Article Introductions: Semantic and syntactic analysis
This study aims to investigate the semantic and syntactic features of verbs used in the introduction section of Applied Linguistics research articles published in Iranian and international journals. A corpus of 20 research article introductions (10 from each journal) was used. The corpus was analysed for the syntactic features (tense, aspect and voice) and semantic meaning of verbs. The finding...
